How to make memories for less this Summer

Who needs a fancy holiday or trip abroad when you’ve got a park, a picnic blanket, and a whole lot of imagination? The 2025 parenting vibe is all about making those precious memories with your loved ones. From back garden camping to exploring countryside trails, these micro-adventures are proof that magic doesn’t need a passport.

With better weather and school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about shedding those winter coats and letting kids embrace the great outdoors. Who knows? You might even sneak in a quiet moment with a book while they’re busy hunting for bugs. Bliss!

Trips outdoors don’t need to break the bank - simple is always better. Long days out somewhere fun and new with a picnic often make for the best memories!

How to plan the perfect day out

A relaxing picnic is a great way to escape the routine of everyday life.  What could be better than the perfect blend of fresh air, relaxation, a few family games and delicious food.  You can even take the family pet along!

The best picnic food ideas

Kids will love being involved with the picnic prep and you don’t have to spend a fortune on making all their favourite nibbles!  Be resourceful and make good use of what you have in the cupboard at home.  A little bit of pre-planning will make for a stress-free outing.

Whether it be sandwiches, wraps, fruit, cupcakes or crisps - myfussyeater.com has some of the best picnic food inspiration for kids!

The right location

The right location can make all the difference to a successful outing.  Whether you prefer a quiet park, picturesque countryside spot, secluded beach or your sunny back garden – consider factors like weather, accessibility and facilities to ensure a comfortable time for everyone.

Theme it

While it’s not essential, you could have some fun theming your picnic (or day out), especially if there’s a occasion to celebration such as a birthday.  Handmade accessories such as cupcake wrappers, jar wraps or decorated paper plates are something the kids can get involved in.  How about pirate accessories, tropical decorations and fruity (mock) cocktails for a beach setting?  Just don’t forget the buckets and spades!

Fun outdoor activities

Whether it’s a picnic you opt for or just an afternoon out embracing the great outdoors, there are loads of activities you can enjoy as a family.

OUTDOOR GAMES like football, frisbee or badminton will get everyone moving around and enjoying the outdoors.

NATURE TRAIL set off to find feathers, pebbles, acorns or wildflowers (please only take flowers that have fallen and are not growing).  Your treasures can be taken home and turned into a collage or scrapbook – and kept as a wonderful keepsake of your day out!

Filling the upcoming school holidays with fun activities for kids can put pressure on parents, however, it’s important to remember that having fun and making memories that last a lifetime shouldn’t break the bank.

Here are some of our favourite ideas for keeping the family occupied over the school holidays:

  • Be a local tourist  - take roads and paths you’ve never ventured down before – who knows what you might discover!

  • Visit a museum – many museums are free to enter

  • Go for a walk  - England and Wales have more than 140,000 miles of public footpaths and bridleways – make good use of them!

  • Hold a mini Olympics – have fun recreating school sports day events such as egg and spoon race, sack race, or tackle an obstacle course set up with brooms, buckets and cardboard boxes

  • Sunset watch or Stargazing – take time out to savour the beautiful sights you don’t usually see when you’re running around and encourage kids to take photographs and appreciate the beauty around them!
