How to keep your toddlers entertained when it’s raining outside

If you’re the sort of family that spends a lot of time in the garden and the great outdoors, the chances are that you’ll find wintery weather and rain offputting.

The good news is that spending a whole day indoors doesn’t have to be a challenge - below, we’ve put together some fun activities to keep everyone entertained and optimistic when the weather’s bad…

Watch some television together

Rather than leave your kids to their own devices, why not sit down in front of the TV and watch one of your favourite shows or movies together? Don’t forget that you’ll find lots of free cartoons for kids on the Everything’s Rosie website - endless hours of fun that also offers some great lessons for your little ones. Alternatively, platforms like Disney+ and Netflix are chock-full of content that will entertain and delight young minds, from Frozen to Peppa Pig!

Build a fort in the living room

Another fun way to keep toddlers entertained on rainy days is to build a castle or a fort in your living room. All you need is a table, some bedsheets, and a few blankets and pillows. Your little ones will have lots of fun if you pack the space with books, torches, and colouring books - and you can even host a picnic in the space to really get them smiling. Kids love forts as they’re cosy and allow them to escape and imagine different worlds - build a story into proceedings and you can ‘knock down’ the hidden den together at the end of the day.

Dance in the rain

Okay, this one’s not for everyone, but if you want to teach your children to embrace life and have a good time regardless, why not throw caution to the wind and dance in the rain? If it’s warm enough and you’re happy to make a mess, dance in the rain with an umbrella - put some music on your phone or sing a song in the rain. Sure, you’ll likely get a little wet, muddy, and cold, but it’s all part of the fun, and you can have a warm bath and some snacks when you get back indoors. Wellington boots and waterproof jackets at the ready, everyone!

Do some chores

Yep, you heard that correctly: turn common household chores into fun games for your children. For example, you could bake together - pouring ingredients into a bowl and allowing your kids to stir the cake mixture. You could ask them to wipe surfaces down with an eco-friendly cleaner and a cloth, and sort the laundry into piles for different bedrooms.

Enjoy some arts and crafts

Rainy days are the perfect time to get creative and try some fun arts and crafts activities, like making your own playdough with food colourings, or finger painting onto large sheets of paper. If you’re looking for some inspiration, we’ve got tonnes of easy arts and crafts ideas for kids on the Everything's Rosie website. From a fun rainbow blower to paper plate caterpillars, paper tube microphones and mini beast binoculars to finger puppets, paper bracelets and cup windchimes, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Experiment and see what you create - it’s not only good fun, but it can also be educational for your little ones, too!
